Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness

In 1776, Thomas Jefferson penned one of the most revolutionary thoughts in all of history when he wrote, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

Today, this fundamental tenet of American democracy is being put to the test in every corner of the world.

The Nations Are Here

There’s a new restaurant here on State St. called the Earl of Sandwich, where the sandwiches are overpriced, the coffee is decent, and the breakfast sandwiches are delish. Hopefully, it’ll out-live its previous tenants – Einstein’s Bagels and Caribou Coffee. However, what’s special about this place is that right above it is a small, easy-to-miss institute called the Michigan Language Center, a.k.a. my mission field for the past year and a half.

From Ignorance to Passion

Something I’ve come to recognize and understand recently is that God’s heart for the lost is HUGE. Even when I feel a burden and a passion for a global issue, I realize that my comprehension of it is still so little, and that the need for the gospel message is enormous.

Imperfect People

There are moments in life that you wish you just had back. Either an inappropriate action taken, an unkind word spoken, or a silly decision made – life is full of these “I want to get on a plane right now and fly to a foreign country” moments.

Along the journey of advancing the kingdom of God, mistakes are going to happen. Why? Because we are imperfect people, period.

Going to Law School for the Right Reasons

For a Christian, the decision to pursue a career in law for the right reasons is not easy. It can’t be for the money. It also can’t be for the prestige. It can’t even be for the beam of pride in your parents’ eyes when they mention to a family friend that their child is going to be an attorney.

It has to be for God. But what does that even mean? How do you know if it is God that has planted the seed of interest and not all those reruns of Law&Order?

Into the Night and Focus Spookfest!

Last week, many in the Focus Ministry –the single adults of HMCC –were able to reach out to those living in the Ann Arbor community through The Night Life and the Focus Spookfest!

The Night Life event was a great success, as many friends and co-workers came out to dialogue, listen to live music, and drink some great Sweetwaters coffee and tea.

Do You Know Your Calling?

Myths about calling. We are often left grasping for an adequate answer when asked, “What is God calling you to do?” I believe the reason for this is because “calling” is a misunderstood concept among Christians and needs to be clarified. Many think that calling is reserved for tasks that are deemed super-spiritual. The misconception behind this is the distinction between “sacred” and “secular” areas of life.
