“M.I.T. has nurtured dozens of Nobel Prize winners in cerebral realms like astrophysics, economics and genetics. But lately, the institute has turned its attention toward concrete thinking to improve the lives of the world’s bottom billion, those who live on a dollar a day or less and who often die young.”
It’s great to read about some of the smartest people in the world using their brain power not to design another widget to make a quick buck but to help solve some of the great social issues of this generation. Often, people with great degrees use their smarts and take jobs simply because of the almighty dollar. Take for example the trend of medical professionals entering the “business of beauty” instead of tackling more urgent patient care.
“But now obstetricians, family practitioners and emergency room physicians are gravitating to the beauty business, lured by lucrative cosmetic treatments that require same-day payments because they are not covered by insurance and by a medical practice without bothersome midnight emergency calls.” Read the Article
Not that there isn’t a need for cosmetic treatments. But what would happen if all the great doctors in the world became plastic surgeons? We would all be concerned the next time we went to the hospital for emergency care!
God has definitely given his children great creative gifts and talents, not so that they may use them for themselves, but to shine light into a hurting and dying world.
God creates plastic surgeons
But I get your drift.
I read that article before, too, and thought it was very cool. My sis went to MIT and she was the one who told me that there are specific competitions for engineers to try to develop low-tech solutions to problems in third world countries. Very, very cool.
I've always wanted to be an influence to those I work with through my work. I'm blessed to do work that I feel God has called me to, and I don't think everyone feels that way about what they do. But because I do, I like the idea of transformasphere.
Curious, free-thinking, but known by God
Response
Yes, ackim, God does create plastic surgeons. :) May all be used for the Glory of God.
And to you comment about work. I truly believe that work is a gift from God and when someone enjoys it greatly, such as in your case, that is a true blessing.
